Hydraulic Filters
Hydraulic filters are an absolute necessity in everything from mining equipment and excavation operations to industrial assembly lines. Most failures in fluid power systems are a direct result of contamination — up to 75%.
Contamination is controlled and eliminated by a proper filter. Newly installed components, bad plumbing (failed lines), and simple wear and tear all contribute to potential failures.
A good rule of thumb to consider whenever maintenance procedures are carried out — if a line is replaced or a piston assembly gets overhauled — is this: when in doubt, install a fresh filter. There are several types:
- Bag filters
- Screen filters
- Magnetic filters
Bag filters are constructed of industrial cloth sewn into the shape of a bag that sits inside a housing in the system. When fluid flows through, contaminants are trapped in the cloth.
It’s much the same with screen filters, which are typically engineered to trap contaminants down to a specified size, in microns, in their cage-reinforced metallic mesh elements.
Magnetic filters are a little different. They “trap” ferrous particles with powerful magnets that attract and hold them until they can be wiped clean during regular maintenance.
Often this type of filter can also be used as an indicator of machine health. When the filter has collected many metallic particles, it could mean the imminent failure of some internal component, such as a bearing surface.
Just as there are several types of filters, they can be installed in several different configurations:
- In-line
- Off-line
- Duplex
- Return-line
